The strike by staff members at the Durban University of Technology has ended.
This after the university management reached an agreement over salary increases.
The victory by the unions on behalf of workers, including lecturers, means that all staff members would resume work today.
Chaos erupted on Monday when students and staff embarked on a strike over the lack of accommodation and poor staff salaries.
"The management has agreed to our demands, all workers and lecturers will go back to work," said Ivan Govender, the spokesman for the strikers.
On Tuesday, students burnt tyres and stoned the police, who returned fire with rubber bullets, leading to the closure of the university. Lecturers and workers were told to return to work yesterday, while the students are set to return on Monday.
Govender said management had agreed to increase salaries by 10,5 percent backdated to last month and a once-off payment of between R2000 and R3000, according to respective grades.
The strike may have ended for workers, but it looks like no proper academic processes would happen on Monday. Students representative council president Mandla Shange said yesterday they were not prepared to go back to lectures until the problem of stranded students was addressed.
