Forty-eight people were arrested in Johannesburg in a police blitz on the streets of Hillbrow, Braamfontein, Parktown, Berea and Joubert Park.

The anti-crime operation began on Wednesday and ended early yesterday, said spokesman Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla.

Among those picked up was a 20-year-old man caught on the corner of Twist and Koch streets in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

"He was arrested after patrolling police spotted him with another man and decided to search them," Mavundla said.

Other suspects were held for dealing in dagga, being in possession of suspected stolen property, robbery and assault.

All those arrested in the crime-combating operation were expected to appear in the Johannesburg and Hillbrow magistrates' courts today. - Sapa
