The Anglo American and Sowetan Young Communicators Awards is supported by all nine provincial education departments.

This youth development activity of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation seeks to nurture future leaders.

It aims to help to improve participating pupils' presentation and oral communication skills, their oral English communication among second or third language speakers, and also to:

l Encourage participants' proficiency in English, the generally accepted language of business and

academia;

l Encourage a pioneering spirit among the young people of South Africa;

l Embrace the concept of nation-building;

l Encourage youngsters to address key issues facing their communities and the country, and to find solutions to these issues;

l Prepare South Africa's learners for the professional working environment; and

l Nurture assertiveness and confidence among the youth.

Provincial eliminations will be held countrywide between March 14 and June 6.

The finals will be held in Johannesburg on June 20.

Most of the former winners are currently making waves.

They include, pictured from left to right, well-known actor, musician and TV personality Bonginkosi Dlamini, affectionately known as Zola 7, radio and television personality Asanda Magaqa, and public speaker Kenneth Milanzi.
