Claudia Motau and Joseph Nhlapo toiled and saved, then bought land outside Pretoria and built themselves a dream house and named it Maotla.

But the joy of living in their "dream house" was short-lived as the hospitality industry beckoned.

The couple owns an events management company and also look for venues for clients.

Clients would ask for secure, exclusive venues for their meetings, conferences, and accommodation.

"Sometimes it became a struggle to find venues that matched clients' needs," said Nhlapo.

"Because of the limited venues on the market, we decided to turn our house into a hosting facility," he said.

The couple visited various places to find out how the industry organised conference facilities. This involved even travelling overseas.

"Our passion for the industry grew after that. We had no money to start the project, but courage, willpower and commitment to implement it won," said Motau.

No financial institution believed in their plan, so they dug into their savings.

The result was the magnificent Maotla boutique hotel and spa.

This heavenly place offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, with all modern amenities.

One cannot go wrong with Maotla. It is perfectly situated in the beautiful Grootfontein Country Estate, east of Pretoria, and only 10km from the CBD.

The interior of the hotel completes this luxurious venue with highly exclusive finishes.

I recently visited the hotel and indulged in the sauna for total relaxation and mind and body pampering, played tennis and sipped delicious cocktails. The hotel also has a jacuzzi.

Maotla will fulfil your gourmet needs, from a continental breakfast to a romantic candle-lit five course dinner.

Guests who are on business also have all the tools they need for a memorable stay.

The business centre has everything in place - from a wireless network, business channels on TV and a well equipped library.

The hotel has 12 spacious and world-class rooms furnished with Egyptian classic furniture. Bathroom fittings were imported from Germany.

Every room is fitted with a 32-inch LCD TV.

Nhlapo said their relationship with Elemis and Ahava, suppliers of quality international products, guarantees body treatment based on researched trends.
