Stench of impropriety

Surprise, surprise. Another bigwig's associate is accused of landing a lucrative tender.

Surprise, surprise. Another bigwig's associate is accused of landing a lucrative tender.

This time it's the business partner of SAA chief executive Khaya Ngqula's wife.

The faltering airline might need multi-billion rand government payouts to stumble along, but rest assured its executives and their friends won't be affected.

Like just about every other member of the BEE elite they can rely on our tax money to fund the tenders their high-flying buddies push their way.

The South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union says the R3,5billion catering deal handed to Mrs Ngqula's business partner Vusi Sithole stinks and Public Enterprises Minister Brigitte Mabandla is investigating.

Seems like a whiff of impropriety hangs over just about every tender the government and its parastatals issue. So it's about time we as a nation draw the link between this crass commercial cronyism and our stinking state services.

These tenders are paid with our tax money. The more money wasted on graft and inefficiency, the less is available to relieve the plight of struggling citizens and to build the infrastructure our country needs so desperately.

So, Minister Mabandla, will this affair be swept under the carpet like many others?
