The Independent Democrats would "end all spending on weapons and the nuclear industry" - and instead invest billions in turning South Africa into a world leader in renewable energy.
This was the message from ID president Patricia de Lille at the launch of the ID's elections manifesto at the International Convention Centre in Cape Town yesterday.
"You must refuse to give up hope for our country," De Lille told the crowd of about 2000 people.
Outlining her party's manifesto, De Lille said "there is absolutely no reason why South Africa cannot become one of the world leaders in renewable energy".
"This would create thousands of jobs. The sun, the wind and water will be power to our nation.
"The ID would also scrap government plans to spend R700billion on building new nuclear power stations," De Lille said.
The ID also wants higher taxes on luxury goods and cigarettes and alcohol to fund a "minimum income grant" for the poor.
