Media defended

President Kgalema Motlanthe's decision to reject two contentious bills that were threatening media freedom should be applauded.

President Kgalema Motlanthe's decision to reject two contentious bills that were threatening media freedom should be applauded.

Media organisations had earlier made strong submissions to the presidency warning that certain sections of the contentious Publications Bill and the Competition Amendment Bill would curtail media freedom.

Motlanthe last week referred the bills back to Parliament - unsigned - after expressing reservations on the unconstitutionality of some of the sections.

The bills were going to have a negative impact on the free flow of information.

We hope Parliament will address his concerns and hold extensive consultations with relevant organisations before making the necessary amendments that will satisfy all the affected parties.
