A Mpumalanga business tycoon - who allegedly sprayed his wife with a hail of bullets after she dumped him - has been accused of adopting delaying tactics.
And the Temba magistrate's court last week warned Solly Madileng that the ball will roll with or without his lawyer on February 20.
Temba regional court magistrate, David Mokgotsi, said he would oppose any more moves by Madileng to delay the case.
"This case has been dragging on for nearly two years now because you always change lawyers," Mokgotsi said.
"I have no choice but to continue with this case without your lawyer, what do you think?" he said.
Madileng pleaded with the court to give him one last chance and promised that he would bring his attorney for his next court appearance. The case was postponed to February 20 for trial.
His wife Maki, who survived the shooting, told Sowetan yesterday: "I am relieved that finally a trial date has been set for my husband's trial after so long."
Since the alleged shooting on October 4 2007, the high-profile case was postponed more than 10 times because Madileng's lawyer did not appear.
Madileng, who comes from Marapyane in the KwaMhlanga area, also faces charges of kidnapping and assault.
He allegedly shot Maki, 41, repeatedly before throwing her out of a moving vehicle in Marapyane.
He had allegedly visited her while she was staying at her parents' house after she had moved out of the matrimonial home. The couple had apparently been experiencing problems for some time.
At the time, Madileng was out of prison on R5000 bail on a different case. He is now out on R4 000 bail for the attempted murder of his wife.
Before his arrest for her attempted murder, Madileng was out on bail for allegedly kidnapping and beating Ephraim Makitla, whom he accused of stealing from his shop.
Both cases have since been combined.
