A doctor has been arrested after he allegedly told his female staff to have sex with him or face the chop.

Women employees at the medical centre in Ekurhuleni told Sowetan the doctor was "such a sex pest he wants to enjoy the nookie with almost every female employee there".

Nomthandazo Rapodile and Freda Mdluli said they were dismissed after refusing to roll in the hay with the Nigerian medico.

They reported the incidents to the police. "The police have come here looking for him, but he has been avoiding them," Rapodile said.

Magauta Motloung, the hospital's secretary, told Sowetan she could lose her job because she had also rebuffed his sexual advances.

"He bought me a cellphone and thereafter demanded to sleep with me.

"Now that I have turned him down he has threatened to deduct the cellphone money from my salary," said Motloung.

Sowetan approached the doctor on Friday but he denied the allegations, saying it was not true that he had been avoiding the police.

"There are no policemen looking for me," he said.

He refused to comment further and referred enquiries to his lawyer, Tersius Basson, who said: "Those allegations are rubbish.

"They have worked for him for a long time, so why are they only coming out now? My client has laid them off due to financial reasons."

Inspector Joseph Molefe from a nearby police station paid the doctor a surprise visit on Saturday and arrested him in full view of patients.

A police source said: "He made matters worse by resisting arrest. The arresting officer carried him on his shoulders to the police vehicle."

Police spokesman Godin Nyathi said the doctor was charged with three counts of indecent assault.

"According to the complainants he has been harassing them for a long time. They decided to break the silence after sharing their experiences," he said.

Rapodile said: "When he dismissed me I told him that I was leaving with my dignity still intact because I refused to sleep with him."

The doctor will appear in the Benoni regional court today. Basson said he would be instituting a defamation suit against the two complainants.
