Durban is committed to hosting a "green" World Cup event in 2010.

To achieve this the city council, led by Mayor Obed Mlaba, is establishing a R215million programme that will focus on "environmentally friendly energy, water, transport, waste and biodiver sity".

Debra Roberts of eThekwini municipality's environmental department said the Greening Durban 2010 Programme plans to refurbish the Umgeni estuary and Blue Lagoon area as a "green precinct" for residents and visitors.

Roberts said the project would create jobs for unemployed youths from Osindisweni and Buffelsdraai near Verulam.

The programme plans to plant more than 62000 trees by next year.
