Twenty-six villagers from GaMampuru near Steelpoort in Mpumalanga will appear in the Sekhukhune magistrate's court today on charges of public violence and malicious damage to property.

Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the suspects were arrested on Thursday after they damaged a health department vehicle. He said the irate mob also tried to petrol bomb a police vehicle and 26 people were detained.

The violence in GaMampuru arose after complaints about poor service delivery. Villagers have to use contaminated water from the Tubatse River and some have been infected with cholera.

"More than 20 people in the area are reported to have died of cholera since the disease broke out last November," said one angry resident.
