Zonkesizwe Athletics Club is in mourning following the death of one of their prominent veteran members, James Nthangeni.

A long-distance runner, Nthangeni and other friends were involved in a car accident on their way to a road race in Mayfair two weeks ago when their car's tyre burst, said Mehlo Hlabangane, Zonkesizwe's registration officer.

Leonard Chuene, boss of Athletics South Africa, has also sent condolences to the Nthangeni family, club and friends on behalf of the federation.

"I knew him quite well, a man who was committed to the development of the sport. I used to run with him in various road running events,' said Chuene.

"It's such a terrible thing to happen to the sport in the new year, we urge the athletics family to attend the funeral."

Nthangeni was based in Tembisa but will be buried at Soweto's Avalon cemetery tomorrow. The funeral service will take place at Bapedi Hall in Meadowlands from 7am to 9am.
