More than 25 poor families from various parts of Mopani district in Limpopo will benefit from a cultural tourism project backed by the Irish government.
The construction of the cultural tourism project started early last year, with the building of an exhibition centre and five guest houses in every area.
The guest houses havebeen built in the yards of poor families to help them generate cash to feed their families.
The project is being funded with a R15million donation from the Irish government through its embassy in Pretoria.
Similar projects are taking place in Modjadji, Mohlaba, Thabina, NkowaNkowa and Sekgopo.
The project is being coordinated by the Mefakeng Tourism Association.
Elvis Mtlwane, the association's project manager, said yesterday that the project had created more than 350 temporary jobs during the construction phase.
He said the thatched guest houses were being equipped with traditional bathrooms and were spacious enough to accommodate a number of people.
"Revenues generated from tourists who visit the areas from time to time will go into thepockets of the families where the guest houses are situated," said Mtlwane.
He said they had chosen the poorest families so that they too could benefit economically.
Construction work is expected to be completed by the end of next month, and the project will be officially opened by the end of March.
