Alleged intimidation, threatening SMS messages and a magistrate who has recused himself have stalled a case in which "people's poet" Mzwakhe Mbuli is accused of assault.

The magistrate recused himself after a witness's lawyer showed him threatening messages sent to his client.

Mbuli, 49, who appeared in the Germiston magistrate's court yesterday, is accused of intimidating five people - allegedly demanding they reveal who had killed his uncle, Mandla Mbuli, last year.
