Former Soweto boxing trainer Jacob Mabuza had a dream of producing world boxing champions that would make South Africa proud.
A witty man who always had a lot to share with his friends, he loved socialising with all kinds of people.
"Bra GG", as he was popularly known, of Tladi, Soweto, died last week Wednesday after a short illness.
He started his boxing career in the early 50s at Kliptown, where he grew up. He moved to Tladi in 1956, where he continued with his boxing career at the local gymnasium.
During his heydays he fought the likes of former boxing champions Levy Madi, Sexton Mabena, Percy Lewis and Enoch "Schoolboy" Nhlapo and many others.
He also trained up-and-coming youngsters in the area. He loved boxing so much that he wished to impart his skills to everyone, including his two sons, who unfortunately passed on at a very young age. His wish was to produce world champions who would represent his beautiful country.
Bra GG was born on January 3 1934, the third child of the late Mr and Mrs Mabuza. He attended school at Lilydale Primary in Soweto and later worked for a clothing factory in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, until his retirement.
He married Sara Nhlapo and had three children - two boys who died at a young age, and a daughter.
Mabuza is survived by his wife, daughter Ray and granddaughter Simphiwe.
He will be buried tomorrow at Croesus Cemetery.
The service will be held at his home at 254 Babinaphuthi Street, Tladi, from 7am to 9am.
