The historic township of Soweto is about to make more history by having an upmarket theatre built at the posh Jabulani Mall.

This flagship theatre, called the Soweto Theatre, is scheduled to be completed early next year. It will comprise three venues.

Theatre 1 will seat 400, Stage 2 will seat 160 and Stage 3 will seat between 80 and 90 people.

The theatre will be of vital importance to schools because there will be many exciting and educational children's plays performed there.

The Soweto Theatre aims to provide equitable access to arts and culture for all citizens of Johannesburg as well as ensure economic and social sustainability of arts and culture services.

Besides providing job opportunities and an arena for individuals to showcase their talent, the theatre will also attract patrons from the greater Johannesburg area as Soweto is fast becoming a sought-after local and tourist destination.

The theatre is being built by the City of Johannesburg, but Sowetans with a flair for design can be part of this historical moment by designing a logo for the Soweto Theatre. This opportunity is for Soweto residents only.

The best design will be used as the corporate logo. Entries close on February 6. For enquiries, you can email christinel@promusica.co.za
