Police mark their day with fighting crime

The South African Police Service celebrated national Police Day yesterday by embarking on crime prevention activities.

The day also commemorated the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Eldorado Park police station celebrated the day by convening a community gathering at Don Mateman Hall to highlight the importance of forming partnerships to fight crime and signing a pledge to commit to the initiative.

The station said the day was meant to enhance the relationship between police and community in curbing crime in the area.

At Protea Glen police station, the celebration was started with parades before a short prayer.

Captain Mpande Khoza of Moroka police station said they did a roadshow that involved all police stations in the area to inform communities about the services they are offering.

Central Johannesburg police celebrated with the business community around the city centre.

Captain John Maluleke said that they had formed partnerships with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Community Policing Forum, Central Johannesburg Partnership which works with property owners in the city centre, Kaya FM and the National Prosecuting Authority.

Constable Bonginkosi Mdletshe of Rosebank police station said they had "friendly road blocks" and issued pamphlets giving tips to motorists on crime.
