I did not fund Cope dinner, says Sono

Jomo Cosmos chairman and head coach, Jomo Sono, distanced himself and any of his companies from reports linking him to the sponsorship of a Congress of the People (Cope) fund-raiser in Port Elizabeth last Friday.

Sono was astounded that he and other top business people had sponsored a R20 000 table for a fund-raising dinner for Cope.

It was reported that Vecto Finance, a company whose majority shareholder is Sono, paid the R20 000 for a table.

A bemused Sono said yesterday: "I am the chairman of this company, a board member and a shareholder and I state categorically that nobody ever approached me about sponsoring a table at the Cope event. Whoever did so did that on their own accord and not with the approval of the company.

"Somebody is being mischievous. How could I (be in Port Elizabeth) as Cosmos were due to play in Limpopo on the Saturday. That is what I had to prepare for."
