I was astounded to read in the press the other day that the ANC plans to spend up to R100million on its election campaign.
That is a staggering amount for a political party that purportedly represents "the poorest of the poor" to spend on communicating its election promises to its impoverished constituency, especially for a party that has been ruling this country for 15 years with an untroubled majority.
At a time of economic gloom around the world this level of obscenity and insensitivity should not be tolerated - millions of rands spent on hiring hundreds of buses to ferry people to rallies and parading fleets of rented vehicles in the impoverished townships, adorned with pictures of Jacob Zuma, the ANC president.
As a poor person I can think of many meaningful things the ruling party could do with R100million, starting with the millions of poor children who go to school hungry every day, to the thousands of people in Limpopo who are battling to fend off the cholera that Robert Mugabe is exporting into our country.
Then there are the unfulfilled promises to build houses, schools, clinics, and so on.
Be sincere about "a better life for all" and forget about a flashy life for the greedy few. We are not impressed.
