A man who allegedly bludgeoned his wife to death with a hammer at the weekend was remanded in custody yesterday.

Lucas Malaka, 29, of Moloto village, near KwaMhlanga, was arrested on Friday morning for the murder of Angel Mahlangu, 32, after a quarrel at their house.

Malaka appeared in the KwaMhlanga magistrate's court on a charge of murder and his case was postponed to Monday next week.

Captain Mumsy Cibe of the KwaMhlanga police said the man allegedly hit his wife twice on the forehead with a hammer.

"He then went to neighbours, claiming he had gone to the toilet, and on his return to the house found his wife lying in a pool of blood."

The man then went to report the matter to the police and gave them the same version.

Cibe said the police accompanied him to the scene. On arrival, they found blood on the floor and confiscated a bloodied hammer believed to be the murder weapon. The man was immediately arrested.

In another incident, a woman, 50, was gang-raped and strangled at "Sun City", KwaMhlanga, on Friday night.

No arrests have yet been made.
