Dudu Msane, national under-21 netball team coach says she will have a better understanding of what her team is capable of on their return from their tour of New Zealand next month.
The 15-member team announced on Sunday leaves on February 23 for the 10-day trip that should go some way to addressing one of its main challenges - the lack of experience. Some have never been away from home for that long.
"Eighty percent of the team is not really experienced internationally. We also lost some players who no longer qualified for this age group. The ones we have are almost ready but we do need to improve some things," said Msane.
That means exposing the players to different styles of netball played internationally against countries they will be facing in the Cook Islands in August.
The Cook Islands comprises 15 islands in the South Pacific Ocean, and the main island, Rarotonga, will host the tournament.
In addition to the hosts New Zealand, the South Africans will face Fiji and Singapore during their 10-day tour.
