Sri Lankan troops yesterday fought their way into Mullaittivu, the last town held by Tamil Tiger rebels who are holed up in the northeast of the island, military sources said.

Troops in small groups entered the western edge of Mullaittivu, the final known urban stronghold of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, via boats, a military official said.

The Tigers blew up a dam and flooded surrounding areas on Saturday in a bid to slow down the military advance towards Mullaittivu town, but troops used boats to enter the town's outskirts, the official said . - Sapa-AFP
