A top detective in KwaZulu-Natal has been assigned to beef up the investigation into the assassination of Inkosi Mbongeni Zondi.

A team of investigators led by Superintendent Simon Madonsela has been appointed. Madonsela is revered for solving faction fight and political violence cases in Steadville in Ladysmith.

Zondi was ambushed after visiting his fiancee, Mbali Mbhele, at Durban's Umlazi township on Thursday morning.

His death has triggered speculation that it could be linked to taxi violence in Msinga or was politically motivated.

It is believed that three men sprayed Zondi's car with bullets, and police collected 50 spent AK47 cartridges at the scene.

Zondi will be buried in Ngome at the weekend.
