Stimulating exhibition by Bell

Patience Bambalele

The Goodman Gallery in Cape Town will start the 2009 arts calendar with an inspiring exhibition by Deborah Bell.

Titled Flux, the exhibition runs until February 21.

In this new body of works, Bell continues exploring her art creations in relation to her life's journey.

Born in 1957, Bell is fundamentally informed by a personal search of herself and she often draws on spiritual imagery from a wide range of sources. Her use of varied sources means that the symbols she employs can never refer only to one idea.

She thinks of her exhibition as a visual investigation of the spiritual transformation, learning and fluidity implicit in that journey. Her use of varied sources means that the symbols she employs can never refer only to one idea.

Revisiting ancient cultures, her multi-layered images suggest a shared history and a common ancestry. The exhibition consists of both large and small-scale bronzes, mixed media paintings on paper, and etchings, exploring transformation through process and material.

Bell has exhibited in Tokyo, New York, Washington DC, Paris and in South Africa.
