Sandile Ngubeni, left, who was separated from his mother when the council banned boy children from Helen Joseph women's hostel, spoke about how he lived without her in a rented room.

"I wake up at 6.30am. I take a bath and eat. I leave home at 7.40am as I start school at 8am. When I come back from school I prepare for the next day and polish my shoes.

"If there are any dirty clothes I take them to my mother at the hostel for washing . It is sometimes difficult to do homework on my own and sometimes I miss my mother ," said the Grade 6 pupil at Cater Primary School.
