Police in Ennerdale have launched a manhunt for two men who gunned down an off-duty police officer during an armed robbery at his mother's house in Lenasia South, Johannesburg on Saturday night.

Constable Sibusiso Sikhakhane, who was attached to the Kliptown police station, was shot five times.

Police spokesman Constable Edwin Ntseo said Sikhakhane was shot at about 11pm and died at the hospital early yesterday.

Ntseo said the suspects shot the deceased first. They then pointed a gun at both his wife and mother before helping themselves to her wedding ring, cellphone, his wallet and an undisclosed amount of money.

"His wife was admitted to the hospital for trauma and the mother was also admitted. It is not clear at this stage whether the incident was planned or not," said Ntseo.

It was also reported that another two police officers were shot as well yesterday while on patrol in Bothasig, Western Cape.

Popcru spokesman Benzi Soko said the union was outraged by the continued attacks on their members who were shot while trying to protect the community.

Ntseo said a murder docket was opened at the Ennerdale police station.
