Health Minister Barbara Hogan has expressed concern over the increasing number of cholera cases in SA. "One death due to cholera is one too many," she said.
About 36 people have died of cholera in South Africa since the cross-border outbreak in November last year 5696 people have been diagnosed with the disease.
"I am concerned about the soaring number of new cases. But the low case fatality rate across SA reflects the quality of care provided in most public health facilities."
"The key task is to work with the relevant water authorities to ensure improved access to clean water in some parts of our country and in Zimbabwe."
Limpopo and Mpumalanga remain the hardest hit, with about 95 percent of cases having been reported in these two provinces.
Reports have surfaced that some victims in rural areas have had difficultly accessing ambulances in time. "The matter was receiving attention," Hogan said.
"The department has established a national cholera co-ordinating committee. It will implement a national plan of action, which includes education.
"I have approached the private health sector in a bid to generate additional resources, including medical volunteers to help to treat cholera victims."
