Unemployed women in Johannesburg now have renewed hope following a project to enable them to acquire skills to start their own businesses at no cost.
This is thanks to 40 scholarships from the Unemployed Need Transformation (UNT) and City of Johannesburg.
The pilot project will see 40 women from disadvantaged communities undergo training on manicurists.
UNT was formed by Shaun Unterslak four years ago to help abused women start new lives.
Unterslak described the scholarships as a breakthrough for his organisation.
"It has always been our dream to expand our operation in Johannesburg. Now it has come true," he said.
The training centre for mani- curists had been operating from Ikhaya Lethemba shelter in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, bringing hope to victims of abuse.
More than 200 women have been trained.
Under the new scholarships the 40 participants will be divided into three groups and undertake training at three community centres. One will be in the Johannesburg CBD, one in Fourways and the other in Sandton.
The women will be trained for 10 days in manicuring, pedicuring, artificial nails, hand massages and eyelashes.
After completing the training they will work and develop their businesses with the centres for six weeks. After that they will leave the centre to work from home or other facilities.
The trainees will receive certificates, that are accredited by Services Sector Education and Training.
Unterslak said only South Africans, preferably unemployed women, were allowed to apply.
They can drop their application letters with contact details, address and a certified copy of their ID at Metropolitan Centre, 158 Loveday Street, on the 13th Floor.
The closing date is January 22.
