Former SuperSport United midfielder Peter Khoabane yesterday came to the defence of players agent, Mike Makaab, who has been heavily criticised by the South African Football Players' Union for allegedly cheating players.
The players claim Makaab ripped them off of thousands of rands after he took them to the PSL's dispute resolution chamber for breach of contract.
Safpu said it was nonsensical and embarrassing that Makaab claimed 20 percent from the players' signing-on fees and their salaries even though he did not help them find employment.
But Khoabane was adamant yesterday Makaab's hands were clean.
"I don't know whether the people who are making these serious allegations know what they are talking about," said Khoabane, who also played for SuperSport United.
"If they had a strong case against Makaab why can't they open a case of fraud against him with the police. Some of our players today are drunkards and they want to blame agents," said Khoabane, who is now a soccer analyst.
Makaab yesterday stressed that as a licensed Fifa and Safa agent he would abide by the rules and regulations of both associations when dealing with players.
"The commissions charged are in line with the industry norm and far below the 20 percent that Safpu has accused us of charging.
"In practice, in the majority of cases, the commission paid by a footballer on his contract of employment with a football club to us is less than 10 percent.
"Furthermore, we do not receive monthly payments from any footballer whom we represent, as alleged," said the former championship winning coach.
