A bodyguard of the Pietermaritzburg mayor yesterday abandoned his application for bail after investigations revealed that he faces a pending attempted murder charge.

Both alleged offences involved shooting.

It is alleged that on January 4 Nkosivumile Ngukulanga, a bodyguard of mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo, shot and fatally wounded Sibusiso Mahlaba. He evaded the police for two days until he surrendered on January 6 and appeared in court the next day.

Investigations showed that on March 22 last year he allegedly committed attempted murder by shooting at one Ntokozizi Gumede. He was granted bail of R1 000 and the trial for attempted murder was set down for March 26 this year.

For the current murder charge he was remanded in custody until next Thursday for the senior prosecutor's decision. - Sapa
