Mpumalanga Premier Thabang Makwetla's ambition to eradicate the water service backlog in the province by 2010 inched closer yesterday when the national cabinet injected R49million into the project.
The "Water for All" project, which forms part of the five flagship projects adopted by a 2006 government lekgotla, aims to provide clean running water to all homesteads, villages and towns in the province by next year.
"The money will be spent in various priority municipalities that include R6million for the total eradication of the water service backlogs in the Dr JS Moroka, Albert Luthuli, Thembisile and Emakhazeni municipalities," said government spokesman Ntime Skosana.
Skosana said R2,5million would be spent on the installation of mobile water plants in cholera-prone areas where hundreds of households are expected to benefit.
"In Delmas, R12million will be spent on providing a mobile batch plant as an interim measure to purify water," said Skosana.
More than 2800 households in the Thembisile, Emalahleni, Mkhondo and Mbombela councils also stand to have clean running water at a cost of R6million.
Skosana said five water plants would be repaired in Carolina at a cost of R2million.
The province last year set aside R87million to address the water problem in the Nkomazi area.
