SuperSport United rediscovered their winning ways yesterday, brushing aside Maritzburg United 3-1 at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.

The pressure is back on Maritzburg coach Gordon Igesund, while the victory has propelled the league champions to the top of the Absa Premiership - albeit temporarily.

Ajax Cape Town are a point behind them, ahead of the weekend fixtures.

The home side were no doubt pumped up by their wonderful win at the weekend, when they crushed the high-flying Ajax, but SuperSport United were first to score - in the seventh minute.

Gould headed in a corner taken by Elias Pelembe to put the visiting team ahead.

In the 15th minute Pelembe again provided the cross, but Anthony Laffor could not keep his header down and it sailed over Maritzburg goalkeeper Tashrique Goldman's crossbar.

Then the hosts - through Brice Aka - tried to beat United goalie Dennis Onyango but without any luck.

Maritzburg finally got the breakthrough in the 18th minute when Lynch Pule's header levelled matters for Igesund's charges.

Former SuperSport player Sphiwe Mkonza came back to haunt his old team as he played the provider in Pule's goal.

The action went back and forth after the half-time break, until the 70th minute when Pelembe rose to head in a cross from Laffor.

The Mozambican has been quiet so far this season, hampered by injuries, but this performance could be a sign he is regaining the form that turned him into a star in his maiden season in the Absa Premiership.

Pelembe completed his brace with a stunning goal on the stroke of full time to hand Gavin Hunt's side a morale-boosting win after the 4-1 walloping handed them by Free State Stars at the weekend.

The winger received a well-placed pass from Glen Salmon, before beating Goldman with his right foot.
