This week some children in our country received a rare present - they underwent surgery that will enable them to smile.

That's right, to stretch their lips to give that universal message of warmth and friendliness.

Many of us may not be aware that this is Facial Reanimation Smile Week. That is perhaps because we take our ability to smile for granted. Perhaps that is why many of us who do not suffer from the facial paralysis that these children have, think nothing of wearing a long face, even when there is no reason at all but just to show that we can.

So go ahead, smile at the person next to you. It will cost you nothing and it is a privilege that many out there wish they had!
