Captain Dorah Shongwe of the Nelspruit police is in hot water for searching a man in his private parts, in contravention of police regulations.
Shongwe searched a foreign national whom she had been told was in possession of a knife. While she searched the man, she touched his penis.
The man complained that she had been disrespectful.
Shongwe was searching for the knife after a complainant told her that the man had tried to stab him with it.
The complainant said he had gone to collect his cellphone from the man who promised to repair it, but was told that it was lost.
Shongwe and a male police officer arrived at the scene on Samora Machel Drive in a police van after receiving the complaint.
Shongwe took the knife from the man and put it in the vehicle while asking the complainant if he wanted to open a case.
When the story and picture were published in Sowetan on December 24, the provincial police said it was against the rules for a female cop to search a man, let alone in the private parts.
Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane has confirmed that an internal investigation will be conducted into the matter.
"At the moment we are just waiting for the Nelspruit police management to give us an explanation about the incident," Khoabane said yesterday
"We are hoping to haul the member in question before a disciplinary hearing."
