Matric results delays might have been caused by irregularities and a possible computer glitch.
Briefing the select committee on education and recreation, the Education Department's deputy director-general, Penny Vinjevold, said an investigation was under way to determine the exact causes of the delay.
In some provinces failure by schools and circuits to submit pupils' year marks was identified as the cause. The department and Umalusi, the council for quality assurance in education, are investigating the extent of the problem.
Vinjevold has also announced the extension of the matric supplementary exams registration.
Yesterday was the initial cut-off day for registrations, but this was extended to tomorrow.
To register, pupils were required to go to the school or province where they wrote their 2008 examinations with their identity document.
Those who wanted to write supplementary exams to gain admission to tertiary institutions, or to start working, were expected to provide documents to prove this and complete a registration form available at district offices.
The investigating team will inform Education Minister Naledi Pandor about their findings by the end of this month.
On February 6, registered pupils would be expected to collect admission letters from their respective district offices. These, along with identity documents, were required to gain entry to the exams, to be written between February 17 and March 23.
Pupils could SMS their student number to 35909 to verify if they qualified for supplementary exams.
