Toyota Avanza is no longer seen as ugly

Anything that has the Toyota sign will sell in South Africa, especially in the market's B and C segments.

When the Toyota Avanza was introduced here three years ago it was difficult to believe that South Africans would buy it because some of us considered it ugly. But today we see lots of them on the roads.

The Avanza compact wagon has had a minor facelift.

The initial introduction saw the Avanza creating a new market by offering a 5+2 seating configuration in a B-segment size vehicle. It offers flexibility for family transport, whether passenger or luggage requirements, because all the rear seats can be folded and tumbled in to various layouts.

This compact MPV mainly caters for younger families whose transport needs are growing. The Avanza offers items that you would expect on high-level specification models. For instance, all models in the range have power windows on all passenger doors, power steering, remote central locking and an immobiliser. All, excluding the base model, have air conditioning, ABS brakes and driver and passenger front airbags. The TX grade is also equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels.

Interior revisions include a new dark-grey trim. On the top-of-the-range Avanza 1,5TX, silver plating is added to the door arm rests.

Outside door handles are now painted in body colour on SX models, while chrome handles have been added to the TX models. Further additions to the SX models include side protection mouldings and window frame blackout. Green tinted laminated windscreen glass is now standard, while the 1,5 TX still has shaded glass on the side and rear hatch windows.

The four-model ranges remain unchanged with its choice of 1,3- or 1,5-litre double overhead camshaft, 16-valve engines with VVT-i variable valve timing technology and S, SX or TX specification levels. The 1,3-litre engine produces 67 kW with maximum torque of 120 Nm. The 1,5-litre engine offers maximum power of 80 kW, while torque stands at 141 Nm. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard.

Pricing: 1,3 S R123300, 1,3 SX R138500, 1,5 SX R146200, 1,5 TX R165500.

All models have a four-year or 60000km service plan and three-year or 100000km warranty.
