DJ Clock's debut album, The First Tick, is turning heads and making them nod.
The deejay and producer, whose real name is Kholile Gumede, has proven that he is more than just a beat-thumper.
The turntable phenomenon has turned his hobby into a career.
Born at Mabuya Park in Vosloorus, Gauteng, Gumede has a unique style, which can be classified as dance house layered with sultry vocals.
First Tick includes the famous hit song Umahamba Yedwa, which is currently rocking dance floors.
"I think my album is different because I've used electro-sound with a lot of local flavour," says the shy deejay.
The album is selling like hot cakes in winter. It hit the shelves last May and has already sold 20000 copies. This is quite a feat because house music does not sell well if you are unknown.
Having honed his producing skills while working with well-known deejays such as Ganyani, Durban's Finest, Big-Nuz, Mzekezeke and Cindo, Gumede is going places.
Asked what took him so long to release an album, he says: "I have been in the industry for nine years. Professionally, I started three years ago.
"I took my time because I wanted to make a name for myself first. It is not an easy industry and if people don't know you, they won't buy your music," he says.
Gumede became fascinated with the industry at the age of 12.
"My love for deejaying started a long time ago. My father inspired my passion for music. I bought music software and tried to produce my own songs," says Gumede.
He says as time passeds people recognised his talent and he was asked to play music at school socials and house parties. People in the industry started noticing his knack for making people move and soon he was in demand.
While maintaining a busy schedule behind the decks as DJ Clock, his attention moved to production. Today he is regarded as one of the best deejays around.
