Nearly three weeks after matric results were announced, 2589 pupils in Mpumalanga are yet to receive them.

Provincial education head Ray Tywakadi yesterday said both national and provincial education departments were working around the clock to finalise the results.

"We want to assure all schools, parents and pupils that their pending results will be finalised by January 26," said Tywakadi.

Final matric results were released on December 30, 2008.

But 56 000 pupils - 2589 are from Mpumalanga - throughout the country have not received their results.

Tywakadi said the delay was due to systematic problems.

"The centre number indicates that no marks have been captured, but the mark sheets reflect that marks have been captured and verified," he said.

"Errors or malfunctioning of the document-trail system, for example, captured verified status that was changed by a person while Life Orientation results were calculated out of 500 instead of 400."

He added that the names of some pupils did not appear on mark sheets while in some cases subject allocations were incorrect.

He said the province found that 245 captured mark sheets were lost in the system.

"Managing handwritten mark sheets posed a major challenge because the processes to create computerised mark sheets is a very long one," Tywakadi said.
