A man who was wanted by police for a string of armed robberies has been found dead and naked in the bush in Mpumalanga.

The family of Mancane Sifiso Joseph Mdluli, 22, of Daantjie Trust near Nelspruit, discovered his decomposing body in dense bushes at about 4pm on Sunday afternoon.

Police said Mdluli had robbed a cashier of R9000 at the Ghoboza supermarket on Wednesday last week.

The suspect, according to the police, had exchanged gunfire with a security guard after the robbery.

"The suspect pointed a firearm at the cashier and robbed her of R9000," said KaNyamazane police spokesman Captain Phillip Fakude yesterday.

"As he left the supermarket he met a security guard who was coming out of the toilet.

"The robber fired a shot at the guard, who retaliated by shooting the suspect twice in the chest."

He said the man managed to escape and disappeared into nearby bushes.

The guard was taken to hospital, and the matter was reported to the police, who launched a manhunt for the armed robber.

Fakude said on Sunday afternoon the police received information that members of the suspect's family had found his decomposing body.

"We found the suspect stark naked. The R9000 was missing but we found R350 under his body," said Fakude.
