A family of a 16-year-old girl who was burnt to death by his 19-year-old jealous lover feels they have been robbed of their future breadwinner.

Pauline Masenya, of Mmametlhake village in the KwaMhlanga area of Mpumalanga, was allegedly beaten up by his boyfriend before being set on fire.

Pauline and her boyfriend were Grade 12 pupils at a local school.

"She was a very bright girl and everybody in the family was looking up to her," said her mother, Jeanette Masenya.

Masenya told Sowetan yesterday that his daughter's boyfriend, who lives a few blocks away from her, was angered by a strange phone call on Friday at about 8pm.

"He insisted that the person who had called her was her boyfriend and an argument ensued during which he beat her up," she said.

"Pauline fainted and he doused her with petrol which he had been carrying in a school bag and set her alight. She died on the scene."

Mmametlhake police spokesman, Constable Hastings Chaane, said the suspect turned himself in to the police and confessed to the crime.

He faces murder charges and his case was yesterday postponed to next month for further investigations.
