An argument between two senior officers at the Modimolle police station degenerated into a fist fight.

Work came to a standstill on Thursday when other officers and members of the public watched as the station commissioner Superintendent Mosima Isaac Maila and his subordinate, Captain Martinus Boshoff, exchanged blows.

The fight allegedly started in Maila's office and continued outside.

Boshoff, a SA Police Union shop steward in the Waterberg region, appeared in the Modimolle magistrate's court on Friday charged with assault. A few minutes after Boshoff's lawyers successfully negotiated his release he opened a countercharge against Maila.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the two were released on warning. Their case will be heard on March 2.
