Police in Moroka, Soweto, believe they have made a breakthrough after they bust a notorious gang that was wanted for murder, attempted murder and a series of housebreakings.

The six-man gang was arrested on Saturday night.

"The police have been working around the clock trying to nab these men," said spokesman Captain Mpande Khoza.

He said the men were wanted for two murders, two attempted murders and housebreakings committed in November.

"Last week Friday they shot and killed a 50-year-old woman in Senaoane. The next day they shot and killed a 40-year-old woman in Phiri," said Khoza.

The gang had been terrorising mostly Phiri, Senaoane and Mapetla residents.

He said it seemed their modus operandi was to steal electrical appliances, especially TVs and DVDs.

He said residents had sleepless nights not knowing when the gang would strike.

Khoza praised the community for its role in the arrests.

"Members of the community gave us information about the gang's whereabouts. We are grateful for their support," he said.

Khoza said the men had attempted to kill a 28-year-old Tshiawelo man and a 26-year-old man from Mapetla. Both men are still in hospital.

He said an unlicensed revolver, live ammunition and stolen goods were found in their possession.

"We are looking for a second firearm that was also used in the robberies and murders," he said.

The men, aged between 21 and 22, are to appear in court today.
