The ruling absolving former spy boss Billy Masetlha of any wrongdoing should be encouraging to South Africans who might have wondered how far the courts would protect us from those who want to settle political scores by using state institutions.

The ruling absolving former spy boss Billy Masetlha of any wrongdoing should be encouraging to South Africans who might have wondered how far the courts would protect us from those who want to settle political scores by using state institutions.

At least three prominent South African politicians facing criminal charges have cited political interference by their enemies.

They are ANC president Jacob Zuma, who faces corruption and racketeering charges, KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Peggy Nkonyeni, who is accused of corruption and fraud, and Bushbuckridge mayor Milton Morema, who is up for murder.

Perhaps they will be encouraged by Masetlha's case to trust the courts of law.
