Cholera infections are getting out of control in South Africa, with the number of new cases increasing daily.
Nearly 2500 cases have been reported countrywide and the death toll has risen to 15 after the death of a woman from acute diarrhoea in Mpumalanga on January 5.
Limpopo still remains the hardest hit despite the stability of deaths. Since the outbreak in November 2023 cases have been recorded. About 79 new cases were reported yesterday.
Limpopo health spokesman Phuti Seloba said: "While the department is doing everything in its power to control the disease, we are not in a position to control people's movements in areas where the disease is likely to spread . "
Gauteng cholera cases rose from 162 to 173 yesterday. The 11 new cases were reported in Tshwane.
KwaZulu-Natal cases have increased to six, while Western Cape still had seven.
"Mpumalanga also reported more cases, saying the disease had spread to three municipalities - Dr JS Moroka, Thaba Chweu and Bushbuckridge.
"There is also an increase in diarrhoea cases ," said Mpumalanga health spokesman Mpho Gabashane.
The World Health Organisation estimates that since the Zimbabwean cholera outbreak in August last year, more than 40000 people have been infected in SA. About 2100 have died.
