Baby Champs fighters ready for final flurry
The moment of truth has arrived for 34 finalists in the Baby Champs boxing development programme.
These aspirant fighters, who have successfully gone through a number of stages, will be in action tonight at Sammy Marks Square in Pretoria.
Their fights, in all 17 weight divisions, will be contested over four rounds. Action is scheduled to start at 6pm. SABC will go live at 9.30pm, and bouts that took place earlier will be televised later.
Loyiso Mtya, who has been tasked with handling the national development programme by Boxing SA, said fighters from Mpumalanga and Free State failed to make the final this time around.
The weigh-in took place at Boxing SA's offices in Nasrec at midday yesterday.
Twinkling stars to look out for include Miniyakhe Sityatha and Thabo Sonjica from East London, Wandile Mseleku and Mthobisi Buthelezi from KwaZulu-Natal and Tyson Sixakuma from North West.
This development boxing programme, which was launched in 2005, has managed to unearth talent among boxing licensees. Some fighters have gone on to become national and international champions.
Budding promoters, managers and ring officials have also been given opportunities to make their mark in the arena of professional boxing.
Meanwhile, Mtya announced that there will also be some female bouts, but in the amateur ranks. He said the SA National Amateur Boxing Organisation will be in charge since it controls the amateur ranks.
The women's bouts are scheduled to start at 3pm.
