The director-general of the Department of Education, Duncan Hindle, is happy with the progress made by most schools on the first day of the new academic year.

Hindle said the first school day for inland provinces, including Gauteng, was very encouraging. He said one such school, Progress Comprehensive High School in Pimville, Soweto, was ready to face the challenges brought by the first day of school.

School principal Mamaponya Makgoba said: "The textbooks are already here. We also have our exercise books, so the learners are ready to receive their first lessons today."

Makgoba said the school needed to work hard to increase the number of pupils who pass mathematics.

She added: "If I look at our matric results, we did not do well in maths. We have made some progress in physical science because of the interventions that we made during the year."
