The issue of under-performing schools can no longer be fudged.

It must be made a national priority this year to prompt education authorities to redouble their efforts to breathe life into these schools.

Tough questions ought to be asked of district officials who consistently fail to micro-manage problematic schools and produce tangible results.

Hiding behind the coat-tails of unions should no longer be an option for incompetent teachers and principals.

The time has also come for the unions to clarify their stand on issues of performance and teachers that treat their union membership as an insurance against accountability for their incompetence.

Education Minister Naledi Pandor says she will fire incompetent teachers and principals who fail to heed calls to jack up their act.

This tough approach is long overdue.

The government has pumped billions of rands into redressing inequalities in our education system over the past 14 years.

It is high time that the taxpayer saw a return on the investment by way of quality teaching and results.
