No doubt the gatherings with friends, financial commitments and the pressure of family obligations have led many straight to the drinks and snack table for all the wrong reasons.

Happy or sad, the holiday season is not the best time of the year for your waistline.

Apart from the obvious easy access to alcohol and food, the guilt that stems from over-indulging tends to worsen an already depressing situation - making it almost impossible to start the new year with a bang.

Year-end blues are often caused by the emotional roller-coaster ride that is part of the festive season. It's important that we make a conscious effort to work through our issues and not resort to over-indulgence to numb the pain.

Lloyd says research done in the US shows that throughout the population, the six-week holiday season was responsible for 51 percent of yearly weight gain.

"A mind-over-matter approach can be the secret weapon in avoiding the festive mood munch, but this does not mean you have to deprive yourself either. Just do things in moderation," Lloyd says.

She says starting the year with a clear goal and sticking to it throughout is necessary to avoid trying to get rid of the extra kilos picked up during the holiday season.

"Getting in touch with your goals will give you something positive to focus on," she says. "Once you have achieved those milestones at work, or with your family, you will see how making the right choices this year will not only keep the blues at bay but will also get you off the fat track."
