Striker Katlego Mashego made a superb debut for Orlando Pirates when he scored the clincher for Bucs as they pipped struggling Maritzburg United 2-1 at Johannesburg Stadium last night.

Mashego scored a beauty from long range in the 38th minute.

Receiving a clever back-heel pass from Teko Modise on the touchline from the left flank, he fired the ball past goalie Tashrique Goldman much to the excitement of The Ghost.

Mashego was also voted man of the match.

Pirates took the lead through defender Lucas Thwala in the 12th minute from the penalty spot. This after United's new recruit, Fanyana Dhladhla, fouling Teko Modise inside the penalty box in an attempt to clear the danger.

Pirates were inspired by Dikgang "Terminator" Mabalane, returning from a two-match suspension.

It took the battling Team of Choice 18 minutes to pull one back when Dhladhla, on the edge of the danger box, beat out-of-position Bucs' goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs.

But Dhladhla became a villain minutes before regulation time when he was sent off by referee Peter Mabuza for a second bookable offence.

lPlatinum Stars beat AmaZulu 3-2 at Olen Park Stadium in Potchefstroom.

The Tycoons took the lead as early as the third minute when Hendrico Botes beat goalie Kakonje Kalililo from inside the box after a pass from Joseph Mkalipa.

Stars nearly increased their tally two minutes later but Kalililo acted swiftly this time to deny the in-form Bradley Grobler.

But the Zambian goalminder failed to stop Grobler when the young forward scored in the 17th minute.

Usuthu reduced arrears through Marc van Heerden who scored from the penalty spot a minute after the restart.

AmaZulu got the penalty after Mkalipa fouled Nhlanhla Zwane inside the danger box.

The Durbanites continued to exert pressure on Stars and they were rewarded for their fighting spirit when Bradley Ritson leveled the score with a header in the 69th minute.

While many people at the stadium were convinced that the tie was heading for a stalemate, Jabu Mahlangu struck Stars' winning goal from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute.
