The Department of Home Affairs has denied allegations that one of its officials in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, had refused to marry a gay couple because he found their relationship abnormal.

The Department of Home Affairs has denied allegations that one of its officials in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, had refused to marry a gay couple because he found their relationship abnormal.

Alexander Bruce, 25, and Jaco van der Walt, 19, allege that an official at the department's Germiston regional office refused to marry them, saying their union was "not normal".

Siobhan McCarthy of Home Affairs said the pair were turned away because they had not made an appointment. - Namhla Tshisela
